Somatic Experiencing
Somatic Experiencing (SE) is a form of alternative therapy aimed at relieving and resolving the symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and other mental and physical trauma-related health problems. Developed by Dr. Peter Levine, it is grounded in the observation that wild prey animals, though regularly threatened, are rarely traumatized.

Unlike humans, these animals utilize innate mechanisms to regulate and discharge the high levels of energy arousal associated with survival behaviors. These mechanisms provide animals with a natural way to recover from threat and return to their baseline functioning.

Somatic Experiencing proposes that the human body similarly possesses the ability to recover from trauma. It focuses on the client's perceived body sensations (or somatic experiences) as a gateway to identify and release traumatic shock, which may be trapped in the body. SE operates on the principle that trauma symptoms are the effects of a dysregulated autonomic nervous system (ANS) and by facilitating the client's awareness of bodily sensations, it aims to restore ANS equilibrium. The therapy typically involves the gradual and controlled exposure to trauma memories or cues to help the person integrate and process these experiences safely, thus preventing an overwhelming flood of emotions or sensations.

SE is applied through a combination of talk therapy and physical therapies, including gentle touch or movements, designed to help release the physical tension that remains in the aftermath of trauma. The therapist guides the client through the process of noticing internal sensations and emotional reactions, helping the individual develop increased tolerance for difficult bodily sensations and suppressed emotions.
